Mentorship
Structured guidance from students and physicians who took a nontraditional path, at every stage from pre-med through residency.
About AltTrack Med
The Alternative Track Student Medical Association (ATSMA) exists for the students whose road to medicine looks nothing like the brochure, and who are all the stronger for it.
AltTrack Med supports and empowers nontraditional medical students through mentorship, community, and advocacy. We celebrate the diverse paths people take into medicine and work to make sure every one of them can succeed, from the first prerequisite course through residency and beyond.
"Nontraditional" means something different for everyone. You might be a career changer, a first-generation college graduate, a parent, a veteran, or someone returning to school after years away. You might have taken gap years, worked in another field first, or found medicine later than your classmates. If the standard timeline never quite fit you, this is your association.
We serve pre-med students and medical students alike, nationwide, with programming built for the realities of an alternative track.
What We Do
Structured guidance from students and physicians who took a nontraditional path, at every stage from pre-med through residency.
A national network of peers who understand the detours, career changes, and gap years, so no one navigates the journey alone.
Championing accessibility, equity, and representation in medical education for students whose paths do not fit the mold.
Our Story
AltTrack Med was founded by Rachel Bare and Morgan "Mo" Sweeney, two students who knew firsthand how isolating the nontraditional path can feel. They saw talented, determined people talk themselves out of medicine simply because no one had shown them the way, and they set out to build the support system they wished they had.
What began as a conversation has grown into a national association preparing to open membership in Summer 2026, with mentorship networks, peer communities, and resources designed for students at every stage.
What We Stand For
Career changers, first-generation students, parents, and late bloomers belong in medicine.
We share the unwritten rules openly instead of letting them stay hidden.
We grow by lifting each other, not by competing for scarce seats.
A physician workforce that reflects real patients starts with who we support today.
Membership opens Summer 2026. Add your name now and be among the first nontraditional students to join AltTrack Med.
